We have just completed this very traditional rectangular engraved wood sign for a customer.
The sign measures 580mm long x 150mm high, has deeply engraved letters and an engraved surrounding frame with rounded corners to complement the design.
As the requirement for this job was for a dark red finish on the wood, with black letters, we elected to use a traditional spirit based stain protected with a clear satin finish. The sign is to be installed in a protected location above a doorway underneath a veranda.
The timber used was a reclaimed piece of cedar, salvaged from the stiles of an old door many years previously. It had the old finish removed and was planed and sanded to a smooth finish, before cutting to size.
To obtain the required red colour we started with a clear spirit based carrier and added a mahogany tint until the desired depth of colour was achieved. This was applied to the sanded wood sign with a cloth to give the desired effect.
The sign was then top coated with two coats of a clear water based finish for protection, before the engraved lettering was hand painted with a black acrylic paint.
